The four Mandarin tones spoken sequentially over the syllable /u:/ (pinyin: “wu”) by a female speaker, analyzed acoustically using the program Praat (Boersma & Weenink, 2013). The top panel displays the speech waveforms. The bottom panel displays the spectrograms (frequency scale in black on the left) with the F0 overlaid in blue (frequency scale in blue on the right). In Mandarin, these words mean “house,” “without,” “five,” and “object,” respectively.
