2 Vertebrates Vertebrates are animals that have a backbone.
Mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians are part of the Vertebrate animal group.

3 Mammals Mammals have fur or hair. Mammals are warm blooded.
Mammals feed their babies with milk. Mammals have live babies, except platypuses and echidnas who lay eggs. Mammals have lungs.

4 Reptiles Reptiles have dry and scaly skin.
Reptiles lay leathery shelled eggs. Reptiles are cold-blooded. Types of reptiles include: turtles, tortoises, snakes, lizards, crocodiles and alligators.

5 Birds Birds have wings. Birds are warm-blooded. Birds have feathers.
Birds have beaks. Birds lay eggs with hard shells.

6 Fish The fish group includes sharks, jawless fish and bony fish.
Fish live in water. Fish breathe through gills. Fish have fins. Most fish have scales and lay eggs.

7 Amphibians Frogs, toads and axolotls are amphibians.
Amphibians have soft and moist skin. Amphibians live on land but return to water to reproduce. Amphibians start as tadpoles with gills before going through metamorphosis where they develop lungs.

8 Invertebrates Animals that lack a backbone.
Invertebrates include arachnids, insects, annelids, molluscs, myriapods and crustaceans.

9 Arachnids Ticks and spiders are arachnids.
Arachnids have hard bodies that are divided into two main body parts. Arachnids have eight legs. Some arachnids have fangs.

10 Insects Insects have hard bodies that are divided into three main body parts. Insects have antennae. Insects have six legs. Some insects have wings.

11 Annelids Earthworms and leeches are annelids.
Annelids are soft-bodied. Annelids don’t have legs. Annelids have repeated segments throughout their bodies.

12 Molluscs Molluscs are soft-bodied.
Some molluscs create a shell outside or inside their bodies. Octopuses, snails and cuttlefish are molluscs.

13 Myriapods Myriapods have hard bodies.
Myriapods have one pair of antennae. Myriapods have repeated body segments with legs. Some myriapods can have up to hundreds of legs. Millipedes and centipedes are myriapods.

14 Crustaceans Crustaceans have hard bodies with jointed legs.
Crustaceans have two pairs of antennae. Most crustaceans live in the sea, although slaters live on land.
