In the early years of the twentieth century, Picasso, still a struggling youth, began a long term relationship with Fernande Olivier. It is she who appears in many of the Rose period paintings. After garnering fame and some fortune, Picasso left Olivier for Marcelle Humbert, whom Picasso called Eva. Picasso included declarations of his love for Eva in many Cubist works. Eva was diagnosed with cancer and during her rapid deterioration Picasso tended to her every need, making daily trips across Paris to visit her in the hospital.

Paris Picasso moved to Paris in Paris was the center of European art. Picasso and his friend and fellow painter Carlos Casagemas decided it was time to see Paris for themselves. Self Portrait, photograph, 1902 Self Portrait, 1900

The Blue Period In 1901, his friend passed away. Picasso was devastated by the death and the mood of his paintings showed this. This period is called the Blue Period. How do these paintings make you feel? Self Portrait, 1901 The Old Guitarist, 1903

Blue Period This particular pigment is effective in conveying a somber tone The Blue Period work is quite sentimental, but we must keep in mind that Picasso was still in his late teens, away from home for the first time, and living in very poor conditions

“Le Gourmet” 1901 “The Tragedy” 1903

The Rose Period In 1904, Picasso took interest in the world of circus performers and actors. Acrobats and the clown-like Harlequin often became the subject for this new period known as the Rose Period.

Cubism Picasso soon left the Rose period behind and began a new experimental phase known as Cubism. Picasso was interested in African sculpture and the way it distorted the body into imaginative shapes. This is a painting of a guitar. How many shapes can you find in the picture? Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, 1907

Cubism Cubism breaks up an image into shapes and planes, showing multiple sides of the same object at the same time. Picasso was widely respected for his innovative work. “I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them.”

Classicism In 1917, Picasso met a beautiful dancer named Olga Kokhlova and in 1918 they were married. Picasso’s paintings during this time were brighter and sunnier than his prior Cubist works.

Surrealism In 1925 Picasso became closely involved with a group of artists known as the Surrealists. They were interested in the world of dreams and spontaneous behavior.

Barbarism In 1937, Picasso was asked to paint a large mural for the Spanish pavilion at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Picasso chose Guernica as his subject. The painting shows a series of terrifying scenes showing the brutality of war and its destructiveness.

Guernica

World War II World War II began in The Germans invaded and conquered France. Picasso could have fled, but he decided to paint and sculpt. Much of his work took on a somber mood, but by staying in Paris, the artist became a symbol of freedom.

World War II

After the War In spite of the war, Picasso’s fame spread all over the world. His lithograph of the dove became the International symbol for world peace.

A Celebration of Peace

Picasso’s Late Works In the last two decades of his long career, Picasso produced more work than at any other time of his life. During this period, some works are not only dated by month and day, but with a numeral (I, II, III, etc.) indicating multiple works created that single day This late period tends to be overlooked, but contains some of the finest of Picasso's paintings. Some critics maintain Picasso was creatively lazy at this point Regardless of your position on Picasso's personal and artistic life, each of us can, in view of our own mortality, be awed by his final self-portrait

The Final Years Picasso spent his last years as a celebrity-his art as well as his person became a myth. In this period, Picasso spent a large amount of time reworking masterpieces by other painters, such as the Velazquez seen above.

Throughout Picasso's lifetime, his work was exhibited on countless occasions. Most unusual, however, was the 1971 exhibition at the Louvre, in Paris, honoring him on his 90th birthday. It was the first time a living artist had been honored there He died in 1973 at the age of 91 In 1980 a major retrospective showing of his work was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City
