We all know there are unrealistic expectations as a teacher including preparing for standardized tests, lesson preparation, meetings, new teacher evaluation systems and discipline. But let’s really focus on the challenges you face in preparing your students for competition. The starting point for everything that you are going to see today is MBA Research’s website. It should be your go-to location for all of the organization’s services and products. You’ll find that all of these fit into an instructional system—rather than being independent stand-alone items.

Business Curriculum Standards Instruction Proof The MBA Research Instructional System connects the dots for you starting from business validated standards, helping you determine what to teach all the way through student assessment. This ensures that your course content, instructional materials, and your tests are aligned. Integration into DECA Standards development Competitive event sponsorship Competitive event taskforce support Alignment with national standards All of MBAResearch data and services are available to Career and Technical student organizations. MBA instructional tools, particularly LAP modules, the MBA Learning Center and mbatest.org provide strong support for students preparing to compete in competitive events. MBA Research provides sponsorships for CTSO competitive events, keynote speakers and representation at conferences and on CTSO committees Representatives of CTSO’s serve on the task force that guides MBA Research CTSO’s are aligned with the national Business Administration curriculum standards. DECA Competitive events are anchored by the national standards and take advantage of the MBA Research framework that recognizes the common core standards plus various degrees of specialization in entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality, management and marketing. All exams used by DECA are developed by MBA Research. BPA is a sponsor of the national Business Administration standards that are available free of charge to all local and state programs. MBA Research instructional tools, particularly LAP modules and the MBA Learning Center (online), provide strong support for students preparing to compete in FBLA/PBL competitive events, with the exception of those focused solely on technology. Additional Keys 4 P's of Role Playing
1 Confidence, Confidence, Confidence!!! This is 90% of the battle! 2 Write down all of the Performance Indicators (PI) 3 Know your role and the judges role 4 Good Introduction - GNAP - Smile :) - Firm Handshake & eye contact 5 Talk about each PI & draw judge into conversation - DO NOT read directly from notes - use bullet points as talking points 6 Draw Pictures, graphs, charts, timelines if applicable 7 CLOSE the deal - "Can we get started . ." Are you ready to buy?" 8 When leaving the judge remember to: Thank them, good handshake, repeat their name 9 NO GUM! This WILL cost you valuable points! 4 P's of Role Playing Punctual - Be on time (10 minutes early) Polite - Remember to GNAP and Close (thank the judge by name) Positive - Be confident in all of your actions Performance - Talk about all Performance Indicators as much as possible (put them on an Agenda for the judge)

What is the Purpose of the Written Entry Checklist?
Online at deca.org Ensures fairness Maintains a level/equal playing field for all competitors Allows for consistent evaluation by judges CE Checklist Brenda The purpose of the checklist is really two fold. First and foremost it keeps the written events easier for the judges to read and evaluate.

The Written Event Statement of Assurances and Academic Integrity must be signed and submitted with the entry. 15 Points deca.org Must be signed by advisor and ALL participants Hole punch and place in front of the folio Statement of Assurance Brenda This statement is designed to ensure that only original work is submitted into competition. Students must cite their sources and give appropriate credit to authors. It must be signed by all competitors and the advisor. If any one signature is not there it is penalty pointed. Additional issues can arise if the page was signed at the beginning of the project and another student substitutes in part way through the project. Make sure that al registered competitors have signed the form.

Page limits require students to be concise and state the most important information in their writing.

The Title Page and the Table of Contents should not be numbered The Executive Summary should be page #1 Ensure graphics don’t cover page numbers Brian Again, this rule is in place to aid in the review of written entries. The more uniform entries are in structure, the easier it is for the judge to find information and evaluate each section.

6. Major content must be at least double-spaced. 5 Points
Title Page, Table of Contents, Executive Summary, Bibliography, Appendix, long quotes, footnotes, and lists may be single-spaced Material in charts or tables may be single-spaced Everything else should be at least double-spaced Brian Again, this rule is in place to aid in the evaluation of written entries. Double-spacing allows judges to make notations and comments while they read each entry.

7. Entry must be typed/word processed. 5 Points
No handwritten corrections Only charts and graphs may be handwritten No handwritten page numbers Don’t submit the exact copy from state/provincial conference – it may have comments from judges written on it This rule is in place to reinforce the importance of submitting professional-quality work.

Thousands of written projects are submitted at ICDC and they must be transported and stored in boxes. Uniform sizing helps with these issues.

LAP Modules Role plays Post-tests Answer keys
Tip: LAP modules specifically to help you reach a depth of instruction that will pay off for students. A LAP is an instructional resource built around a single performance indicator. It includes narrative, discussion questions, ethical dilemma scenarios, a post-test, role plays, activities, and more. This variety of instructional methods encourages depth of learning. Some specific ways to use LAPs that can translate into CTSO success include... -role plays. These give students a chance to practice and get comfortable with the uncomfortable feeling of doing a role play. The more experience students have being in front of a group-- especially when there are questions and they have to think on their feet-- the better they will do at CTSO role play competition. -Post-test questions can be easily used for quizzes. They check for understanding a of specific performance indicator. Choose competitive events that align with the performance indicators you are teaching in the classroom. The LAPs designed for those performance indicators will help your students master them. -Answer keys. One of the best parts of the test items are the answer keys. They include terrific explanation of why an answer is correct, as well as an explanation of why each of the other choices is not. These are terrific teaching resources that get at the "why"-- and that's depth of learning. - But remember, for maximum value, it’s not enough to “cover the LAP.” You really do need to demand that your students master the material.

Business Curriculum Standards Instruction Proof Business This means that MBA Research connects the dots for you from helping you determine what to teach all the way through student assessment. This ensures that your course content, instructional materials, and your tests are aligned. In other words, what students learn in your classroom is what they will be tested on. So, let’s take a look at each aspect of this instructional system and accompanying products. The starting point of the system is the business community specifically from the four Business Administration related career clusters: Finance, Marketing, Management and Hospitality and Tourism. Business: Since its beginning in the 1970’s, MBA Research’s philosophy has been the business practitioners should determine what is taught in classrooms since they are ultimately the employers of students. To MBA Research, it only makes sense that they determine what skills and knowledge businesses need and think matter most. MBA Research determines those needs through a variety of research activities. Standards: Once the business community validates the standards that MBA Research develops, the standards are published for free on the MBA Research website and in Curriculum Builder. Teachers and states can use these standards to update existing curriculum or to develop new courses. These business-validated standards help ensure that our teaching time is focused on what matters most. They help us overcome the temptation to focus on what’s fun or what happens to be in any given book. Curriculum: MBA Research then translates the standards into curriculum such as course profiles, Programs of Study, and course guides that help you in determining what to teach when. Let’s take a quick look at these products. Instruction: MBA Research creates instructional materials that can be used with the curriculum to support teachers in the teaching of the standards. Proof: To make sure that students are held accountable for their learning, MBA Research develops a variety of tools to aid in assessment, both formative and summative. These tools include rubrics, short-answer questions, quizzes, rating scales, and tests designed to evaluate student learning. Gray Zone Use The Gray Zone to introduce your students to problems and situations that don't have one specific right or wrong answer. EachGray Zone is based on a unique performance indicator from MBAResearch's national standards and presents students with an ethical dilemma in business to resolve.

Programs of Study These program-of-study models are designed to meet current and anticipated Perkins requirements. Each is a comprehensive list of courses and course content (including academics) that outlines recommended courses ninth grade through college.
