2
Geographical Situation.
The Matorral Beach is in the south of the island of Fuerteventura, particularly in the municipality of Pájara.
3
Features. It has fine white sand, has a length of about 12 kilometers and an average width of 300 meters. Its clear waters of blue color allow the practice of various water sports and are ideal for swimming. The prevailing wind is favorable to practice sports such as windsurfing, that’s why there are several schools and places where you can hire boards.
4
Protected area. The coastal area of Matorral Beach is listed as a Protected Natural Area since 1994, according to the Law of Natural Areas of the Canary Islands and has a total extension of hectares. The purpose of being protected is to conserve the best representation of a coastal ecosystem: “The Saladar”.
5
Enviromental impacts. The area has been seriously affected by the influx of tourism. Matorral Beach is in a state of degradation caused by the creation of a sand barrier that prevents the entrance of the tides, causing the drought in the bushes. The Matorral Beach is almost the only representation of this ecosystem that exists in the European biogeographic region of the Macaronesia, with an area of approximately 1,270,000 square meters.
6
Endemic species. It also has a number of native plants and a number of endemic invertebrates, and seasonally a decreasing number of species of migratory birds stop to rest in this ecosystem.
