3. Why is homework important?
Homework is not always valued by students
However, hard evidence suggests that homework makes a positive difference (Professor Susan Hallam and the DfE)
Students who did homework were 10 times more likely to do well in GCSEs
Homework is particularly important for lower ability students
In short, homework is indispensable to student progress and enriching the subject

4. Tips to support with homework
Parents can assist by
Providing a table, chair and a quiet place to work
Removing distractions – tv/mobile phones etc
Negotiating with the student when homework is to be done as a student's free play is important too
Checking the time spent on individual tasks and outcome compared to tasks
Ensuring that outside clubs do not hamper a child's quality of work and put a child under undue pressure
Checking presentation and content of all homework being returned to school – is it their best effort?
Signing the homework diary each week
Providing the school with information about any problems through the student planner or by contacting the school directly
