The Great War Ends November 11th, 1100 hours, 1918

the US entered the war in 1917
Two reasons: 1. The Lusitania is a ship carrying over 100 US passengers (and a cargo load of TNT!). Unrestricted u-boat warfare by Germany results in the sinking of this ship. The US gov’t intercepts the “Zimmerman Telegram” – a missive sent by the German government to Mexico, providing them with arms and funding to invade the USA.

In Russia… Desertion of 1.5 million soldiers along with trouble at home forces the tsar to return to riots in St. Petersburg. He is forced to abdicate the throne, and two groups fight over who will control Russia.

Lenin, l Hi promise of “Peace, Land, Bread” (mostly his promise to end the war) is popular with the people. He eliminates all opposition and declares victory in the November Revolution. Immediately after he signs the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, ending the war with Germany. This proves an unpopular move with his former allies. The Allies won back France and Belgium, and the fighting stopped when they reached the German border

President Wilson (USA) proposed “14 points” to the Germans
President Woodrow Wilson of America had drafted a proposal for Germany that included what he felt would be fair terms to end the war and promote peace in the future. His 14 points included: -The abolition of secret treaties -The freedom of the seas -Free trade -Disarmament -Adjustment of colonial claims. And, a number of specific points that dealt with giving certain countries sovereignty and establishment of new borders President Wilson (USA) proposed “14 points” to the Germans
