Egypt is located on the continent of Africa. Most of Egypt is desert.
I. The Nile River Egypt is located on the continent of Africa. Most of Egypt is desert. The Nile River is the longest river in the world. The Nile River flows south to north. As the Nile empties into the Mediterranean Sea, it deposits silt. Over time, the silt has built up where the Nile empties into the Mediterranean and has created a broad delta region. The Nile River was the source of life for the Egyptian civilization.

II. Ancient Egyptian civilization
About 5000 B.C. people began settling around the Nile River and built farming villages. Egypt is called the “Gift of the Nile” because the flooding seemed like a gift from the gods to the ancient people. The northern part of Egypt is Lower Egypt. The southern part of Egypt is Upper Egypt.

Egypt’s economy was based on farming. Trade became an important part in ancient Egypt. The Nile provided for the Egyptians: water for irrigation silt for farming transportation ( to move people and goods)
