Custard’s Last Stand/Battle of Little Bighorn
In the decades following the Civil War, the United States engaged in conflicts with Native American tribes living west of the Mississippi River. Some historians refer to these conflicts as “The Indian Wars”. The primary issue of the Indian Wars was land. The United States government made several treaties with Native American tribes to define Indian lands. However, as ever increasing numbers of Americans moved through, and sometimes settled on, Native American territory, these treaties were often ignored or broken by the government. Native Americans fought the United States for decades. They were ultimately overwhelmed by the superior numbers and weapons technology of the United States Army. Though on several occasions Native Americans defeated American troops in individual battles. One of the most famous of those Native American victories occurred at the Battle of Little Bighorn in Montana.

Custard’s Last Stand/Battle of Little Bighorn
On June 25, 1876 Civil War veteran George Custer attacked over 2000 Sioux and Cheyenne warriors with a few hundred men; Custer and his men where overwhelmed and everyone of them were killed. Today, we’re going to look at many different documents related to the Battle of Little Bighorn. You’re going to choose THREE to FOUR documents and analyze them at your small group table. Finished early? Flip over to the back and watch the video listed about the Wounded Knee Massacre.

Return to Post-Reconstruction
Before the Civil War, very little thought had been given to African- American education. AFTER Reconstruction, how to education African-Americans (especially former slaves) was a dominant issue in the US. In 1877, troops were pulled out of the South, Reconstruction was ended, and African-Americans were subject to poll taxes, grandfather clauses, and violence from the KKK. It was left up to African-American activists to support African- American education.
