Buffer Zones - Status Report
EDMS Buffer Zones - Status Report G. Dumont on behalf of HSE/RP 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee
2
Traceability policy for radioactive equipment at CERN
Recording of the radiological hazards and measurements Identification and recording of radioactive equipment Individual radiological controls (EDMS ) of equipment leaving Radiation Areas with activation or contamination risks Legal requirements: Loi sur la radioprotection (LRaP) Art.36 Ordonnance sur la radioprotection (ORaP) Art. 84 4. 3. 2. 1. 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee

« Buffer Zones » : scope CERN’s Radiation Areas divided in perimeters;
At least one Buffer Zone per perimeter; Buffer Zones located near to the exit point(s) of equipement Objectives: Facilitate the respect of the rules: dedicated space for simple and autonomous traceability; Rise efficiency: decoupled processes in simple steps: Provide a dedicated space for RP measurement with low background; Dedicated for temporary storage (48h) and small equipment only (typical surface 10-12m²). Deposit equipment RP measurement Fetch equipment 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee
5
Specific cases Highly radioactive equipement Heavy equipment
Equipment of large volume Large quantities of equipment >> Buffer Zone shall not be used except for the traceability (computer). Additional temporary zones are put in place RP defines the requirements on the case by case wrt the contraints (space, radiological hazards, planning, transport means, etc.) Question treated in the project phase or work preparation 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee
6
EYETS-16-17 examples Decabling projects (PSB, SPS):
Large quantities of waste expected SPS: Subarea will be delimited and classified as Supervised Radiation Area in BB5 PSB: 361/2-004, already classified as Supervised Radiation Area will be used as a temporary zone Example of temporary zone Shaft Buffer Zone Temporary zone 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee
7
EYETS examples Vacuum chamber exchange of the MU42 (PS) or TIDVG possible removal (SPS): Heavy, big and highly radioactive equipment Immediate removal to the storage / workshop under permanent RP supervision If needed subarea delimited in the machine to keep it in a safe/secured place 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee

Present status (summary)
Most of the Radiation Areas perimeters already equipped with suitable Buffer Zones; Already 43 Buffer Zones: 38 existing Buffer Zones (BZ); 2 BZ under construction (BA80, ISOLDE); 3 BZ which need to be modified (see slides 15-16); 4 new TREC computers needed (slides 12); In total 4 new Buffer Zones needed before LS2: 2 BZ + computer (slide 13-14); 2 BZ only, already existing computers (slides 14); 2 BZ needed for PS/SPS experimental areas during physics (slides 18). 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee

Need before LS2: storages
SMB storage buildings: 3 x computers needed (B.954, 955, TT4) TE storage areas in B.150: 1 x computer needed 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee
13
Need before LS2: AWAKE No Buffer Zone: one new barracks or extensions needed 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee
14
Need before LS2: SPS North Area
3 x barracks or extensions needed B.911 (existing computer) B.912 (existing computer) B.888 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee
15
Need before LS2: Lin2-3/LEIR
Buffer Zone needs to be enlarged 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee
16
Buffer Zone needs to be enlarged or moved
Need before LS2: SD5 Current Buffer Zone Buffer Zone needs to be enlarged or moved Possible extension 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee
17
Other needs: PS/SPS experimental areas
Buffer Zones in PS/SPS experimental areas are mainly used during physics (not critical for LS2) EHN1 and East Areas already (partially) equipped. Following needs: EHN1: +1 Buffer Zone on Saleve side AD hall: +1 Buffer Zone B.393 side 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee

Traceability for (E)YETS & LS2
TREC is becoming one of the major InforEAM module >> ressources may be needed (EN-ACE); Computers are essential: special configuration, guarantee the traceability by anyone in the field; Computers and Buffer Zones need to be maintained (computers renewal, cleaning, floor renovation, etc.). 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee
19
Conclusion Most of the Radiation Areas at CERN are already equipped with Buffer Zones; Only few additional Buffer Zones (4) and computers (6) needed for LS2; New! HSE-RP is going to equip the Buffer Zones with gamma radiation monitors (GRAMS); (E)YETS & LS2: HSE-RP performs regularly the inventory. RP takes already care that material is removed from buffer zones but sometimes the owner does not react. As RP in such a case cannot decide if material should become waste or not we need the endorsement of LSC to classify it as waste after a waiting time of 30 days. Before the EYETS, responsibilities and budget need to be clarified between HSE-RP, EN-ACE and BE-ASR (TREC / Computers / Buffer Zones). 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee
