2
Two Types of Object Pronouns
There are two types of object pronouns: Direct and indirect Direct Object Pronouns (DOPs) answer the question “Who or what is receiving the action of the verb?” Indirect Object Pronouns (IOPs) answer the question "To whom?" or "For whom?" the action of the verb is performed. It tells us where the DOP is going.
3
Example The doctor writes me a prescription. What does he write?
verb Indirect object Subject Direct object What does he write? For whom does he write the prescription? Where is the prescription going? Me To Me In Spanish this sentence would be: El medico me escribe una receta
4
Indirect Object Pronouns answer the question "To whom?" or "For whom?"
(to/ for) me = me (pronounced “may”) (to/ for) you = te (to/ for) him, her, it, you formal = le (to/ for) us = nos (to/ for) them, you all = les Look familiar?

You have already used them!
Me gustan los deportes IOP verb Subject Literally this sentence means: The sports are pleasing to me. Subject verb IOP
6
You have already used them!
Le duele la garganta IOP verb Subject Literally this sentence means: The throat hurts (give pain to) him verb Subject IOP

Lets use them! Here are some examples:
Bolivar le mira – Bolivar watches him. Mike le da el libro– He gives the book to her. How do we know the “le” is a her? Often, a Spanish sentence will have a clarifier. Mike le da el libro a ella. Mike le da el libro a Ana.
8
Lets use them! Here are some examples:
La profesora nos ensena la leccion. – The teacher teaches the lesson to us. He cooks food for me. – Él me cocina la comida. She tells you a story. – Ella te dice una historia. (Literally, she’s telling a story to you) We need to read her a book. – Le necesitamos leer un libro. Notice when there are 2 verbs, its always in front of the conjugated one!
9
Now you try! The teacher teaches us Spanish.
We need to give Jorge the book. I talk to you. We talk to Bob. I want to give you a book. You need to teach us.

Direct Object Pronouns “Who or what is receiving the action of the verb?”
me = me (pronounced “may”) you = te him, her, it, you formal = lo, la us = nos them, you all = los, las We will only use me, te, and nos in this chapter.

Subject verb DOPN Los medicos nos examinan. Subject DOPN verb Who or what do they examine? us “Us” or “nos” is the direct object pronoun.

DOPN Subject verb -Papi, te adoro. DOPN verb Subject Who or what do I adore? you “You” or “te” is the direct object pronoun.

Me, Te, and nos are the same for both sets of object pronouns The verb matches the subject NOT the objects.
