2 Let’s Get Started! What is a life cycle?
A life cycle tells how an animal starts life, grows to be an adult, has young, and dies. Do all animals grow and change in the same way? No, some animals are born and others hatch from eggs. How is a baby tiger different from its mother? A baby tiger cannot care for itself. Its mother can care for herself.

6 SNEAK REVIEW: A mammal is an animal that usually has hair or fur. It gives birth to live young. Reptiles have rough, scaly skin to help protect them. They lay eggs. An amphibian begins its life in the water. Amphibians’ skin is moist so they are able to live on land and in the water. An insect is animal with six legs, antennae, and a hard outer shell.

8 Some animals do not start out looking like their parents
Some animals do not start out looking like their parents. Instead, they change during their lives.

9 Butterfly Life Cycle Butterflies begin as eggs. The next stage after the egg hatches is called the larva. A caterpillar is the larva of the butterfly. When a caterpillar is ready to change, it stops moving and its skin becomes a hard shell. Inside the shell, the caterpillar is slowly changing. This is called the pupa stage.
