2 Aunt Alexandra 2 PARAGRAPHS (USED TO THINK… BUT NOW…)
Beginning Atticus is not raising the kids like he should Scout needs to act and dress more like a lady Kids like Francis are normal End Begins to see atticus is doing a fine job raising his kids Scout is turning into a lady on her own terms and in her own time Those in Maycomb she thought were “Christian” and those she thought were “trash” might not be how she thought 2 PARAGRAPHS (USED TO THINK… BUT NOW…) I used to think I was an expert at everything. Now, I realize atticus is doing a fine job raising the kids, and Maycomb is not what I thought.

3 As you finish your quiz…
Work on completing the brainstorming page (in the “This I Believe” essay packet, page 2) Create your two TOPIC SENTENCES for your body paragraphs. Remember the two paragraphs are: Body Paragraph 1: What your character used to believe Body Paragraph 2: What your character believes now Begin finding evidence from the story to SUPPORT those topic sentences. Finding 2 quotes each paragraph (4 total) is a GREAT start. Put page number for the quotes Write the quote down WORD FOR WORD YOU ARE NOT WORKING ON ANYTHING ELSE. I AM THE SCROOGE.

4 Body Paragraph #1 TS: I used to believe I was an expert on everything, from raising kids to picking out proper friends in Maycomb. CD: For example, I told Atticus I didn’t think Jean Louise could possibly hope to be a lady if she wore pants and didn’t play with toys such as play stoves, necklaces, and tea sets. CM: To me, a young lady must be brought up with girlish toys in order to one day run a house of her own. CM: Atticus allowing Jean Louise to wear pants and play games that were obviously boy games upset me more than anything CD: I also was concerned that Atticus’ children knew where they were from, such as the time I wanted Atticus to let them know that they “are not from run-of-the mill people, that (they) are products of several generations’ gentle breeding..” (177). CM: I used to believe that where you came from was evidence enough for who you would become. CM: I never wanted the kids to associate with those below them for fear they would lose the respect of the other proper families in town. CS: These beliefs of mine made it evident to me that the only way to make all things right was for me to go to Maycomb to ensure the kids received the proper training to be Finches.

5 Body Paragraph #2 TS: However, by the end of the book, I realized Atticus was doing a fine job raising the kids and the people of Maycomb weren’t always what I thought they were. CD: I learned about the people of Maycomb when I held one of my missionary circle meetings and heard what they truly thought of Atticus defending Tom Robinson. CM: This was the first time I realized Miss Maudie was a better person than any of those proper missionary circle ladies. CM: This was the first time I saw how hypocritical our society truly was when it came to helping those in other countries, but not those who needed help in our own back yards. CD: I also realized that day how Jean Louise would make a fine young lady in how she reacted to the news of Tom’s death; I even looked across the room and smiled at her to let her know she was doing a fine job and should continue serving the missionary circle ladies. CM: It seemed Jean Louise and I had a mutual understanding that day. CM: She saw the benefits of being ladylike, and I saw the strength that was already inside of her and how that would be the real reason she would turn into a sweet, young lady. CS: It might have taken me a trip to Maycomb and several weeks of observation, but I finally came to believe my Maycomb Finch family knew the correct people to surround themselves and how to conduct themselves in public.
