The Common Core changes everything Myth #3 Teaching more non-fiction means we aren’t teaching literature anymore Myth #4 The Mathematical Practices are “extra” Myth #5 Common Core will “fix” our education system

5 Curriculum Assessments Instruction So what is CASD doing?
CASD is using teacher teams to adapt to the PA CC Focusing on Grades 3 through 8 Reading and Math Curriculum Teacher made assessment adjustments Less Multiple Choice and True False Assessments Emphasize active, rather than passive, learning by students Deep conceptual understanding, thinking and reasoning Instruction

6 Curriculum Assessments Data What is CASD not doing?
We are not making extensive changes to content in social studies, science and Music, Art, Tech Ed, Business, Health and PE Curriculum We are spending less for testing now than we have in the past. We have been using computer based assessments for 5 years Assessments We are not sending data to the federal government only to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) Data
