What does the digestive system do?
The main functions of the digestive system are: to breakdown foods into nutrients that can be used by the body absorb nutrients that are necessary for energy, growth, and maintenance and rid the body of solid wastes.

What is digestion? the process of making food absorbable by dissolving it and breaking it down into substances the body can use

Mechanical digestion – physical process of breaking down food (chewing, grinding, smushing, tearing, churning) Chemical digestion – chemical process of breaking down food

Begins to break down food into smaller pieces through mechanical digestion saliva in the mouth starts the process of chemical digestion
