Time code; videos’ “address” Post production procedures and tips

3 Types of editing Non linear - Computer based
- Allows for random access of files & footage - Basic principle is digital file management - Each piece of video or audio becomes a clip or file

4 Non linear System Set Up
1 computer 1 edit keyboard 2 computer monitors 1-2 tape decks 1 output monitor

5 Phases of NLE Capture: Transferring source material to hard drive of computer so that you can edit. Types of Source Material - Tape - P2 cards - SD Cards - CDs/DVDs

6 Phase 2: Editing Process of putting video, audio, transitions and effects together Bad editing can be distracting to the viewer!! Process includes: File identification Shot selection Sequencing Adding Effects & Transitions Adjusting Audio Selecting Music & Matching to Video

7 Phase 3: Exporting After the editing, outputting the final piece to tape, file or disc This is called your Edit Master You can create many different types of files as your edit master

8 Types of Editing – Linear Editing
Uses tape as the source material “Copies” footage from source tape to tape Editing must be done in sequence Difficult to make changes, not very flexible Good for editing long pieces together

9 Timecode Timecode is an “address” given to each frame of video
Allows you to pinpoint specific points of video Timecode displays the hour, minutes, second & frame of video.

10 Post Production Prep Shoot for continuity – storyboard your shoot
Think about how your shots will go together - Slate each take; either verbally or visually - Leave handles when you shoot - Record background sounds - Keep a field log - Record cutaway shots (B-roll) Make protection copies of all source material

11 Post Prep contd… Review and log source material – decide what your keeping and what you are deleting Log consists of: Tape/clip name or number Scene number Take number OK or NG Audio info

12 It will save you time and headaches
Post Prep contd… Edit Decision List – lists the shots, time code, effects and transitions in the order they are to be edited. Make as many decisions as you can at this point – It will save you time and headaches

13 On & Off Offline editing:
- Low quality version of the edit used for review. - Does not have effects, transitions or titles - Used to make decisions
