15 INTERVIEWS

16 Interview 1 We interviewed a pre-resident who was originally staying in Tiong Bahru. She commented that she loved the nostalgia of the neighbourhood. The small lanes, laidback atmosphere and gorgeous architecture were one of the many which captured her attention and favour. She loves coming back to reminisce her memories and catch up with her ex-neighbours. She enjoys cafe-hopping in the modern areas, the familiar Tiong Bahru Market, especially the wet market where she can bargain for good deals, the hawker centre food which she savours and the walks she can take in the small lanes. She stated that she wanted to meet more with her friends and continue lifelong friendships with her neighbours.

17 Interview 2 We interviewed a current resident at the Tiong Bahru market who was staying at the old HDB block near the market. He told us that he frequented the market with his family for breakfast and to buy groceries. The many stalls offered a wide variety of food to choose from. The market is also used as a gathering place where neighbours can meet up. He quoted that it is the ideal place for them to relax and catch up.

18 Conclusion Tiong Bahru is an old estate, filled with precious buildings and friendly people. It used to be a cemetery and was originally declared unsanitary. However, with the efforts of Singapore Improvement Trust, they gave Tiong Bahru a major makeover and it is now one of the most charming neighbourhoods, filled with charm, from old to modern and from heritage to hipster. Now, its frequently visited for its old architecture, modern shops, etc. This shows that the good site does not guarantee a popular and flourishing neighbourhood.
