JCOP Workshop 04-05 November 2015
Fieldbus, interfaces Current use of fieldbuses in experiments: Ethernet (e.g. Wiener LV PS, CAEN mainframe) CAN bus (e.g. Wiener VME, Iseg, ELMB) RS232/RS485 USB Profibus (e.g. PLC based applications) Other: GPIB, Parallel, propriety bus WorldFIP, one of the CERN standards, is not used in the experiments JCOP Workshop November 2015

JCOP Workshop 04-05 November 2015
Fieldbus, interfaces Clearly the choice of the fieldbus is not completely free, it is bound to the device you want to control There is a trend to (or at least a demand for) Ethernet based communication with devices Point to point, or ‘bus’-like such as EtherCAT What is the longer term (beyond LS3) future of CAN bus? Anybody using EtherCAT devices? Anybody considering wireless? JCOP Workshop November 2015

Fieldbus, interfaces What buses are likely to be used in the experiments? CANbus JCOP Workshop November 2015

JCOP Workshop 04-05 November 2015
Fieldbus, interfaces Current use of fieldbus (CAN) interfaces in experiments: Kvaser PCI (original CANbus interface standard) Anyone still using these? Peak PCI or USB (CANbus interface for Iseg devices) Systec USB (current ‘de-facto’ standard) RS232 or USB ‘over Ethernet’ (e.g. Digi portserver and Digi USB anywhere) can add flexibility What is long term perspective of USB-CAN interfaces? LHCb sees no reason to change, others might consider change for Ethernet-CAN (LS2) EN/ICE support for systec will continue beyond LS2 Thanks to Geraldine Thomas for her input JCOP Workshop November 2015

JCOP Workshop 04-05 November 2015
Fieldbus, interfaces New generation of interfaces Experiments expressed interest in Ethernet – CAN interfaces General interest in homogenizing the CAN hardware and software across CERN Survey and extensive validation tests performed by EN/ICE Newly supported and recommended solution: Anagate Tabletop boxes with 1/2/4 CAN ports 1U rack mounted with 12 CAN ports DIN rail mounted with 2/4/8 CAN ports Recommended solution for new developments Thanks to Geraldine Thomas for her input JCOP Workshop November 2015

JCOP Workshop 04-05 November 2015
Fieldbus, interfaces Although support for current interfaces will continue, the recommended solution for new developments is the Anagate Ethernet - CAN gateway Keen interest by experiments (CMS); what is the operational experience? CMS aims to replace all SYSTEC interfaces by Anagate gateways in the coming months Thanks to Geraldine Thomas for her input JCOP Workshop November 2015

JCOP Workshop 04-05 November 2015
Fieldbus, interfaces Questions: What buses are likely to be used in the experiments? What is the longer term (beyond LS3) future of CAN bus? Can we converge to a common standard? Anybody using EtherCAT devices? Anybody considering wireless? What is longer term perspective of USB-CAN interfaces? What is the operational experience with Ethernet-CAN interfaces (anagate)?
