Tropisms 6.L.5A.2 Analyze and interpret data to describe how fungi respond to external stimuli (including temperature, light, touch, water, and gravity). 6.L.5B.5 Analyze and interpret data to describe how plants respond to external stimuli (including temperature, light, touch, water, and gravity).
2
Fungus Because Fungi are organisms, they must RESPOND TO STIMULI.
Fungi mostly deal with external stimuli. The main five that they encounter are: Temperature Light Touch Water Gravity
3
Plants Because Plants are organisms, they must also RESPOND TO STIMULI. Plants encounter the same main five external stimuli. Again, they are: Temperature Light Touch Water Gravity

In response to the external stimuli:
Responses In response to the external stimuli: Fungus: Grow towards light PHOTOTROPISM Grow away from gravity GRAVITROPISM (or geotropism) Plants: Grow towards light PHOTOTROPISM Grow away from gravity GRAVITROPISM (or geotropism) Grow towards water HYDROTROPISM Grow or move when touched THIGMOTROPISM Note: In the early stages, fungi grow away from gravity, but as they mature, they may grow towards it. Note: The tropisms don’t apply to the whole plant, but to plant parts (the stems, leaves, roots and occasional flower.)
5
What does that look like?
Tropisms! A Tropism is: When an organism or part of an organism responds to an external stimulus by turning towards or away from it. What does that look like?

There are 4 types of tropisms:

Do Fungi Have Roots?
11
Note: A large group of hyphae is called mycellium!
Nope! Hyphae: Long fibrous strands that look like roots, and do the jobs of roots, but they ARE NOT ROOTS! Allow the fungi to absorb nutrients and water from the dirt around it. Hyphae growth is extremely impacted by stimuli. They almost always grow towards food, water, or reproductive units of other fungi. Note: A large group of hyphae is called mycellium!

Gallery Walk Partners: Choose someone that will not be a distraction to you! You will pick jobs: One person is the writer, and one is the researcher. On a sheet of paper that I will provide, the writer will write BOTH partners’ names. The writer will record the answer to the question or problem at each station. They are not in number order, so make sure you’re paying attention. You’ll have 45 seconds at each station. Discuss and write quickly! Don’t waste time! You do not have to write the question, but you must fully write your answer out. Ex: ✕ 2. E ✓2. Fungus Expected Voice Level: 1
