Tribes, Squads, Chapters & Guilds
The purpose of Tribes and Squads it to optimise us for speed, impact and growth. How do we achieve this?
2
How we are organised as an internet company to transform our culture and allow us to scale - small teams in control of, and responsible for, the impact of their work.
3
Benefits and Outcomes of “Squadification”
Teamwork Communication within the squad is easy and happens regularly (e.g. close collaboration, daily stand-ups etc.) Mission It is clear to the squad what the mission and vision of their work is. The Product Owner updates the squad on the direction and where they should be headed and ensures that their understanding of the mission is updated. Pawns or Players As individuals and as a squad, the squad members feel they are more than just chess-pawns, game pieces to be moved around. They are actually players who decide where the pawns are moved. Codebase Health The squad members can be confident in the quality of their code – it is easily read, tested against and re-factored. Test Coverage Squads have good levels of automated tests. This prevents regression bugs, minimises manual testing and gives confidence to refactor and make changes knowing they can’t break stuff. WIP Squads don’t have too many unfinished projects or tasks at a given time. They aren’t trying to do too much at one. When they deliver to production, the new feature or change is switched on in a reasonable timeframe. Speed Work is fluid and fast-paced. Code is delivered often. Each squads are responsive to requests from other squads and problems are quickly engaged. Ease of Release Releasing code to production is a mundane, frequent activity that doesn’t scare or take too much effort. Delivering Value Squads have a strong feeling that very valuable pieces of software are being delivered to the user with outstanding quality. Suitable Process We have crafted a solid process that yields value at a steady, predictable pace. We do not fear outside interference of distraction. Wider company processes do not slow us down.
