What kind of text will we make? chart, book, letter, something else? Number of sessions to work on the text What will the focus skill(s) be for each session? Which parts will students write? Which parts will the teacher write? Britt reads the slide, then have teachers read the hand out. Discuss. Britt shares her planning process for the video lesson.

Planning for Interactive Writing
Study the qualities of the next text level Craft a piece of writing that mirrors those qualities While writing, the teacher explicitly and repeatedly names/explains those “next level” traits Britt reads the slide, then have teachers read the hand out. Discuss. Britt shares her planning process for the video lesson.

Tips for Interactive Writing
Work “on the edge” of students’ understanding about letters/words Use a combination of demonstrating and prompting techniques Make “fix-ups” on the spot so that the piece has conventional spelling and mechanics. Revisit the piece again and again – reading for joy and word study
