GIS in Admissions Michele Ladenson Summer 2007
2
This project… Was inspired and guided by the work of Victor Mora, Duane F. Marble, and James Herries at Ohio State University Builds on work done by Heather Jakob last summer for this class
3
Objectives To harness the power of GIS to assist in the recruitment of undergraduate students to UTD by providing visual and tabular data on actual yields (proportion of students enrolling) and prospective yields (proportion of students that might enroll if properly recruited given the general characteristics of the school)
4
Data Enrollment 2006 data for UTD (provided by the admissions office)
National Center for Educational Statistics Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) reports from the Texas Education Agency Base Map data
5
Methodology Overview Aggregate the enrollment data to the high school level. Link the AEIS and NCES data to the enrollment data. The AEIS and NCES data uses the Texas high school coding scheme while the enrollment data uses College Board Coding. Calculate an index of maximum probable applicant pool (MPAP) for each high school based on AEIS data. The data included in this calculation include the total number of students going on to college, the size of the high school graduating class, and mean SAT score.
