2. People believe that the groundhog can predict when spring comes.

3. The legend says that early in the morning
the groundhog wakes up and comes out of
his home (burrow).

4. If he doesn’t see his shadow, spring will come soon.

5. If he sees his shadow, there will be 6 more
weeks of winter.

6. If the groundhog sees his shadow, he gets frightened and returns into his burrow to sleep some more.

7. When the day is sunny the groundhog can see his shadow.

8. When the day is cloudy the groundhog cannot see his shadow.

9. The idea of this prediction is the following:
if 2 February is a sunny day, winter will be long.

10. If 2 February is a cloudy day, spring will come soon.

11. Groundhog Day is mostly celebrated in the USA and Canada.

12. Groundhog Day is an observance (the tradition of celebrating something).

Groundhog Day’s festivities are popular in many parts of the US, but the greatest event takes place
in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania.

15. Early in the morning on 2 February, thousands of people gather on a small hill called Gobbler’s Knob near Punxsutawney.

16. The centre of attention is the great weather predicting groundhog called Phil.

17. During the year Phil is looked after by members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog club.

18. During the year Phil lives in a public place visited by people who are fond of reading. It is a library.

19. On 2 February Phil sleeps in his temporary home on the hill called Gobbler's Knob.

20. At sunrise Phil is woken up and pulled from his home.3

21. Phil whispers ( speaks in a very quiet voice)
his prediction.

22. After that Phil’s weather forecast is announced to everyone.

23. The celebration lasts several days with shows, and concerts and special events.
