Lesson 4: ENGINEERING PROJECT Design & Inquiry Method
2
Talkie Time and Recap
3
Objectives: 1. To evaluate the characteristics and concept of an Engineering Project Design 2. To provide examples of an Engineering Project To know the process of an Inquiry Method (Data Gathering for Problem Identification)
4
Buzz Session: What do you think is the difference between an experimental project and An Engineering Project Design?
5
Engineering Research Design
It is an Applied Research Design which primarily aims of producing a product that is useful to man and society Scope: Applied Research; Mechanical-Electrical Project; Planning, Building and Construction Project; Robotics (programs); Technological Application; Engineering Research is often used where: a. There is an application of theory and knowledge to a tangible object b. Testing the concept and producing an output c. There is a need to produce a cost-effective and efficient product compared to the existing one. d. Value for Creation and Invention
6
AIMS OF EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH
Engineering projects are conducted to be able to create something useful. To try out a concept/design if it is doable and cost effective.
7
CONCEPT DESIGN (METHODS & MATERIALS) PRODUCT
8
Engineering Design Advantages Disadvantages Application of theory
Product as an Output Readily useful Disadvantages Meticulous Process Expensive Prone to Z variables Difficult to establish cause-and-effect. Correlational research often done first to establish relationships that may be examined for cause-and-effect. Cause-and-effect are not established by statistics but rather by logical thinking and sound research design. You must establish that no other plausible explanation exists for the changes in the DV except the manipulation done to the IV.

INQUIRY METHOD - Before you start up with your experiment of engineering project you have to gather a need-based data
18
3 Purposes of Inquiry Method 1. To come up with a Research Agenda 2
3 Purposes of Inquiry Method 1. To come up with a Research Agenda 2. Narrow down the possible needs-based project 3. Data driven to back up the need of the study
19
Procedures: 1. Go to the field/community and ask them: 1. 1
Procedures: 1. Go to the field/community and ask them: What are their common problems at home? Work? Community? What do they need to make their way of doing things easy and fast? Or What solution does it require to solve their problem?
20
2. Narrow the down the result into a profile matrix (use simple percentage or a qualitative thematic analysis
21
3. Based on the data, what solution can you provide
3. Based on the data, what solution can you provide? Focus on the problem that you think you can do (skills and interest); needs immediate attention and or you know that there will be resources available for it.
22
4. Prepare a plan of Action – describe the plan; materials; scope; functions; and how will it solve the problem.
23
5. The interview should be done with a sample size of not less than 50 persons. Use convenience sampling. 6. Document the interview (photos) 7. Prepare powerpoint slides of the Output on Inquiry Method. 8. Groupings: 5 members
24
9. Presentation Next meeting 10. Equivalent to 100 points – Quiz
25
Application: Brainstorming: Go to your group and discuss the Plan of gathering the Data
