2 Retail Industry Retail is a sector of the economy that is comprised of individuals and companies engaged in the selling of many finished products to an end user (consumers). Gap Inc. has several major competitors that compete against them such as Abercrombie and Fitch, Macy’s Nordstrom, American Eagle, Hollister’s, J Crew, Express, and Buckle The main store leader in retail clothing is Gap Inc. Gap Inc. is the leading international specialty retailer with Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy and Piper lime, with over 3,900 Stores and 200,000 Employees

3 Gap Inc. History Gap Inc. has its headquarters in San Francisco operates stores in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Ireland, Korea, Japan, China and Brazil; it also operates in the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Korea, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Cambodia, Indonesia and Mexico. On February 3, 2007, Gap Inc. operated 3,234 locations.  In January 2008, Gap signed a deal with Haritopoulos Group to open Gap and Banana Republic stores in Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, and Israel. On August 2010, the company opened its first store in Melbourne, and Australia in Chad Stone Shopping Center.  In September 2011, Komax opened the first Gap store in Chile, due to a franchise.  In October, 2013 the first Gap store opened in Warsaw and Poland. The presence of many of these retail stores and their sales rely on Marketing and Online sales as well.

4 Competitor Background/Info
The major forces in retail such as Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Express, American Eagle, Abercrombie and Fitch, and J Crew have all had impact in other countries as well. Express headquarters in Columbus, Ohio has grown overseas dramatically since 2009 with 125 stores and over $ million in international sales over the next 5 years, now they are late in development overseas compared to other stores like J Crew. J Crew headquarters are in New York City, New York does not have an International appeal yet as it strives to make a comeback with a new C.E.O. that is turning its fashions around. Abercrombie and Fitch headquarters are in New Albany Ohio and are co parent to Hollister. Hollister has closed 60 to 70 United States stores since 2009 and are opening 16 stores abroad with a flagship in Shanghai, where there sales are double. American Eagle headquarters are in Mississauga, Ontario and its American store sales are down by 6%, with most of their business coming from North America, American Eagle has 62 stores in 12 countries.
