2 His birth name was Malcolm Little.
Childhood His birth name was Malcolm Little. His father was a minister who spread the “Back to Africa” message. He died when Malcolm was little.

3 Malcolm lived a life of crime.
Adolescence Malcolm lived a life of crime. At age 20 he was arrested for burglary and served 7 years in prison.

4 Nation of Islam In prison he became interested in this philosophy. It stated that self knowledge was knowing one’s enemy and the enemy of the nation of Islam was the white man.

5 In 1952 he was released from prison.
Muhammad In 1952 he was released from prison. He converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad.

6 He believed that peaceful integration would not work.
Protests He believed that peaceful integration would not work. “Current civil rights leaders were wasting their time.”

7 Muslim Mosque Elijah Muhammad grew jealous of Malcolm X’s attention. Malcolm X left the Nation of Islam and began his own religious group called Muslim Mosque, Inc.

The honorable Elijah Muhammad teaches that for the black man in America the only solution is complete separation from the white man…

12 Quote continued: …The American black man should be focusing his effort toward building his own businesses, and decent homes for himself. As other ethnic groups have done, let the black people, wherever possible, however possible, patronize their own kind, hire their own kind, and start in those ways to build up the black race’s ability to do for itself. That’s the only way the American black man is ever going to get respect.
