9th Grade – Compound-Complex Sentence Review
9/19 Compound-Complex Sentences Review #14 Has two independent clauses using a coordinating conjunction and one or more dependent clauses using a subordinating conjunction (review notes for compound sentence and complex sentence if needed) Write a compound-complex sentence using any of the coordinating conjunctions and the subordinating conjunctions and label subject/verb pairs in all three clauses. (3 minutes) Pass your journal to the back of you. Partner using a different colored pen or pencil – make the correction if it’s a compound-complex sentence or not. Check their Subject/Verb labels. Correct it if not right. Place a check if it is. Place an “x” if not, then correct it so it is. Return the journal to the original owner. Share example sentences as a class. Write down at least 3 EXAMPLE sentences into your notes – below your own example.

9th Grade – Activity 1.15 Springboard pp. 70 - 75
Group Assignment (groups of 3 – 4) (15 min.) For the FOUR paragraphs your group is in charge of, you will take turns reading aloud your assigned numbered sections, and marking the text/label for the rhetorical appeals. (L=LOGOS, E=ETHOS, P=PATHOS) You will then “teach the class” your sections by reviewing what words/lines you underlined and labeled. You answer the ONE Second read question you are assigned in the blue “my notes” section of Springboard. Share the answer w/ the class. You will also fill in p. 75 with your group “Working from the Text” – can use three of the same answers from your section. As groups present, copy the information they present into your own books. (highlighting/labeling/answering Key Ideas and Details Questions)

Ask questions if the answers sound incorrect to you. Answer the questions with the answers they or the teacher give you. If you did not fill in “Working from the Text” on p. 75 – use answers shared.

Strategize – to plan the actions one will take to complete a task. Inference – conclusion about ideas not directly stated. Transcript – written copy or record of a conversation between two or more people. Claim – thesis statement describing the position the writer is taking on an issue.
