2 Figurative Language Any language that is used BUT not meant to be taken literally. It is instead used to create a special effect or feeling. EX: Go take a LONG walk of a short pier.

3 Simile A comparison of two unlike things using the words like or as.
EX: “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.” Forrest Gump 

4 Metaphor A comparison of two unlike things in which no word of comparison (as or like) is used. EX: Life is a dream.

5 Symbol A person, place, thing, or event used to represent something else. EX: The dove=symbol of peace The American Flag= Unity, Freedom Examples from LotF chapter 2 -Conch shell -the beastie -the fire -Piggy’s glasses

6 Verbal Irony Irony in which the writer says one thing and means another EX: “The best substitute for experience is being thirteen.”

7 foreshadowing Giving hints of what is to come later in a story.
