Industrial Assessment Center Database
Benefits, Usage and Evaluation (within the RETAP Assessment Process)
2
What is the Industrial Assessment Center?
U.S. Department of Energy Program: * Free energy efficiency assessments for large, energy intensive manufacturing sites * Student assessment teams lead by faculty advisors * 24 University based centers across the Country * 10 – 15 assessments per center per year * University of Michigan is closest center
3
What is the IAC Database?
Collection of all non-confidential assessment and recommendation data from IAC assessments completed to date * Information is sanitized * Includes information on the facilities assessed * Includes details of resulting assessment recommendations As of , the IAC database contains: * 16,650 Assessments * 125,682 Recommendations
4
Benefits of the IAC Database?
Publicly Available Large Amount of Data Many Types of Manufacturing Facilities Searchable by: * Industry Type: SIC and NAICS codes * Assessments: Industry type, Facility size, Year, Primary products, Energy Costs * Recommendations: Type, Savings, Implemented Cost Additionally a resource on manufacturing technologies, operations, conservation measures and best practices
5
Searching the Database
By SIC Code
6
Searching the Database
By Recommendations
7
Example Use of the IAC Database
Transportation Equipment Manufacturer: SIC Code 3714 Implemented Recommendations with savings over $50,000: * Eliminate leaks in inert gas lines and compressed air system * Recover waste heat from equipment * Establish preventive maintenance program * Turn off equipment when not in use * Reschedule plant operations to reduce loads and avoid peaks * Reduce space conditioning during non-working hours * Use waste heat to preheat combustion air * Maximize efficient equipment use / minimize use of inefficient equipment use * Use radiate heaters for spot heating * Use energy efficient belts
8
Additional IAC Resources
Case studies Information on new technologies and practices Training manuals Web based instruction seminars Contact information for experts Website references for further investigation etc.
9
Why Consider the IAC Database for RETAP?
Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program Free pollution prevention and energy efficiency assessments conducted by teams of retired engineers (similar service) Legal mandate to target industry and business with a department priority on small to medium sized manufacturers (similar sector focus) Readily available resource with up to date information on energy conservation measures including implementation rates and cost – benefit data (similar data need)
10
Incorporating the IAC Database into the RETAP Assessment
Prior to the Onsite Assessment: Obtain needed input data for client facility * SIC and NAICS codes * Primary products produced * Annual energy usage by type * Energy intensive equipment and processes * Client energy issues and priorities * Existing high efficiency equipment / technologies
11
Incorporating the IAC Database into the RETAP Assessment
Prior to the Onsite Assessment (continued): Access IAC Database and search for unique and significant ECMs based on obtained input data Develop listing of possible technologies, high efficiency equipment, processes and best practices to investigate If needed, draft a checklist of data to record or measure to estimate the resource and dollar savings of ECMs or information listing Assessment team reviews and assigns information to appropriate team members based on expertise
12
Incorporating the IAC Database into the RETAP Assessment
During the Onsite Assessment: Assessment team determines if provided ECMs and additional identified information are applicable Completes data collection checklist as needed Records energy usage operations where additional information / ECMs should be investigated
13
Incorporating the IAC Database into the RETAP Assessment
After the Onsite Assessment: Search the database for additional ECMs or new technologies for energy usage areas noted during the assessment Check for any technical detail that can be used to aid in any calculations If necessary, contact referred experts
14
Incorporating the IAC Database into the RETAP Assessment
After the Assessment Report: Note ECMs included in the report and determine their combined resource and dollar savings Complete the database evaluation form including feedback from assessment team
15
How will the IAC Database be Evaluated
Evaluation Criteria: * Time requirement for effective database use * Number of database ECMs included in assessment reports * Resource and cost savings associated with these ECMs * Noted time savings associated with using the database * Other noted benefits, issues, and general feedback on the value of the database Optimize use and collection of evaluation data during five pilot assessments Make determination to continue, discontinue, or modify database use based on data from ten assessments
16
Summary * Identify potential significant ECMs prior to
The IAC Database is a readily available energy efficiency assessment tool and information resource It will be used to: * Identify potential significant ECMs prior to and after conducting onsite assessments * Search for new manufacturing technologies and best practices * Assist with recommendation quantification * Provide additional training Its usefulness for RETAP assessments will be determined
17
Post Evaluation feedback
22 Assessments were reviewed for IAC recommendations. Time to access the database, copy and sort recommendations to eliminate duplicates, and send into the office was ½ to 1 hour each. The number of recommendations ranged from 14 to 69 (average 37) for a given assessment (SIC code). The recommendations were copied directly from the data base and copied into an excel spreadsheet. A sample of the type of input follows.

New recommendations? Very few new ideas and recommendations were found using the database. Examples of “new” recommendations: USE COOLING AIR WHICH COOLS HOT WORK PIECES FOR SPACE HEATING USE FOSSIL FUEL POWERED GENERATOR DURING PEAK DEMAND PERIODS REPLACE HYDRAULIC / PNEUMATIC EQUIPMENT WITH ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT INTERLOCK HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS TO PREVENT SIMULTANEOUS OPERATION
20
Recommendations Discontinue use of the IAC database tool on a regular basis for recommendation ideas. Continue to use the Sample Recommendations Document and update this document as new items are discovered
