Focus 3/4 Japan, located off the east coast of China, is small mountainous nation with scattered islands. Japan's culture and political make-up revolved around its geography. Early Japanese governments found it difficult to unite the people. Point for Discussion: How can Japanese geography be compared to Greece? Focus: 3/2 Japan's geography caused the religion of Shintoism to develop. Politically, Japan's geography caused them to embrace feudalism. Under the Tokugawa, Japan attempted to centralize feudalism in an effort to unify their country. The Tokugawa Shogunate tried to enforce their rule through out Japan. Point for Discussion: What role did geography play in the development of Shintoism and feudalism in Japan?
