Japanese Victories During Pacific Expansion
After taking China in 1937, Japan continued its push for a Pacific Empire Japan attacked the US at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th, 1941 (US declared war on Japan) The surprise attack disabled 19 US ships and killed 2300 men Japan then took the Philippines, Malaya, the Dutch East Indies, Guam & Wake Islands (US) They also attacked Hong Kong (Britain)

Japanese Achieved Early Success in WWII Battles
Japan used surprise bombing raids, like at Pearl Harbor to gain advantage Japan swept through southeast Asia, and took control of many important strategic locations The Japanese treated the people they conquered with extreme cruelty Conditions and treatment of POW’s was even more brutal (dishonorable to surrender)

The Allies Finally Stopped Japan’s Expansion
In April of 1942, the US bombed Tokyo & several other cities (stunning the Japanese) The Allies stopped the Japanese advance at the Battle of the Corral Sea (aircraft carriers) Then the Allies crippled Japan’s navy at the Battle of Midway (huge Japanese fleet) This turned the tide in the war & the Allies went on the offensive

The Allied Strategy for Defeating Japan
US, under General MacArthur, skipped by the Japanese strongholds (“island-hopping”) Japan began to build huge airbase on the island of Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands) US finally defeated Japan at the Battle of Guadalcanal after 6 months of fighting Japan was forced to abandon the island, giving the Allies another key victory
