Who are we? Evelīna Paula Gierkena 9.c

2 Our school We learn in Ādaži Secondary school
We have approximately 1000 students and 80 teachers The school was started to be built in 1984 The architect was Vitālijs Fjodorovs The schools corpuses A and B were opened in 1986and 902 students were learning there at the time But the school was completely opened, with corpus C, in 1987 The schools gymnasium was opened in 2006

3 Ādaži Our school is located in a small town near the capital.
The town has a population of nearly 9000 people The town is near the river Gauja We have a popular chip barnd factory located here, “Ādažu čipši” We also have a wakeboarding club There is also a indoor, outdoor tenisscenter in adaži

5 Latvia Latvia is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, one of the three Baltic states Latvia was established in 1918, specifically November 18th Latvia's capital is Rīga Latvia in total has a population of nearly 2million people Latvia is divided in to four regions : Latgale, Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Latgale.

7 History The 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries were a time of great change for latvians, including the reformation, the collapse of the Livonian state, and the time when the Latvian territory was divided up among foreign powers After the Livonian War (1558–1583), Livonia fell under Polish and Lithuanian rule After the Polish–Swedish War, northern Livonia came under Swedish rule. Riga became the capital of Swedish Livonia and the largest city in the entire Swedish Empire

8 The Capitulation of Estonia and Livonia in 1710 and the Treaty of Nystad, ending the Great Northern War in 1721, gave Vidzeme to Russia ,it became part of the Riga Governorate During the Great Northern War,up to 40 percent of Latvians died from famine and plague,Half the residents of Riga were killed by plague World War I devastated the territory of what became the state of Latvia, and other western parts of the Russian Empire

9 On 18 November 1918, in Riga, the People's Council of Latvia proclaimed the independence of the new country, with Kārlis Ulmanisas the head More than 200,000 Latvian citizens died during World War II After World war II, Latvia's parliament, was again elected in 1993

11 The statue of freedom The statue is located in the capital of latvia
It was built in honor of the soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence It is one of the most important symbols of Latvia It was designed by Latvian sculptor Kārlis Zāle The statue was built interlay of donations of Latvian people It is now guarded by Latvian honor soldiers

12 The statue is of Māra and three stars, that represent reagions : Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Latgale
It was planned to be demolished during World was II, but it never was and the documents of demolition are lost There are many other people sculpted on the statue including that architect himself

14 Traditions There are many traditions that each family have for every holiday celebrated in Latvia The most popular ones are: the Midsummer festival, Latvian song and dance festival, November 18th, May 4th.

15 Midsummer festival Jāņi is an annual Latvian festival celebrating the summer solstice. The holidays—Līgo Day and Jāņi Day—are on 23 and 24 June. The day before Jāņi is known as Līgo Day On Jāņi Eve people travel from the city into the countryside to gather and eat,dance, drink, sing and celebrate the solstice by observing the ancient folk traditions relating to renewal and fertility. People stay up all night celebrating

17 Songand dance festival
The Latvian Song and Dance Festival is one of the largest choral events in the world and an important event in Latvian culture and social life Approximately 30,000 performers altogether participate in the event .The first festival was during the song days in Dikļi in 1864 The first Song Festival in Riga was on the summer of 1873. 1003 singers and 30 orchestra players participated in the first festival. Only once festival was held outside Riga- in Jelgava in 1895. The festival happens every five years

19 November 18th On November 18 nationally minded politicians gathered in Second Riga City Theater   and proclaimed the Republic of Latvia. We also celebrate this now, with many events all around Latvia The most popular destination is Riga, were people lay out flowers at the freedom monument, watch many events trough out the day and end the day with celebratory fireworks

21 May 4th This day is celebrated, because it was the day our independence was restored The main Independence Day holiday in Latvia celebrates the independence of Latvia from German and Russian occupation on November 18, 1918 after the end of the First World War This holiday is similar to November 18th
