Collaborative Learning Community: Student Reflective Assignment
Linda REARDON TEC-546 July 12, 2017
2
Formative Assessment Tools
Formative assessment tools utilize technology to assess students frequently and quickly. By gathering formative assessment data, instructors can gather a quick idea of how well students are understanding content.
3
CONCEPT MAPPING CONCEPT MAPPING TOOLS
A technique that uses critical thinking skills to graphically depict complex thinking processes (Harris & Shenghua, 2017). CONCEPT MAPPING TOOLS Utilizes technology to create concept maps as a formative or summative assessment tool.
4
Concept mapping vs. mind mapping
Concept maps and mind maps are similar tools that are widely regarded in educational theory to have a large impact on student learning. Often, the terms concept map and mind map are used interchangeably. According to Kinchin, concept mapping differs from mind mapping by requiring a more complex relationship between knowledge and concepts within the map (Kinchin, 2014).
5
Popplet Popplet is an online concept mapping tool that can be accessed via the internet on a computer or as an Ipad app.
6
cost Popplett is free for individual users (up to 10 maps).
Teachers can also sign up for a group rate. The costs shown are per student. The subscription includes unlimited number of concept maps.
7
Data Produced Popplet allows the user to manipulate the map freely. Very simple and user friendly. Can be used in virtually all subject areas. More Capabilities: Add an image to a Popple Resize Popples Change Font Drag and Connect Popples According to a study completed by Harris and Shenghua, concept mapping tools are most effective when used as a study guide tool, for students to use when preparing for a unit or summative assessment (Harris & Shenghua, 2017).

How can popplet DrivE instruction?
Concept mapping tools allow students to process and organize their thinking in a graphical representation of how students construct meaning (Sakiyo & Waziri, 2015). Allows students to hone their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Shows instructors how students are connecting ideas and where misconceptions might lie. Allows instructors to determine who is getting it and who is not. Then determine next steps for a lesson or unit.
9
Differentiation with popplet
Instructors can scaffold instruction by providing students with specific guidelines. Students who are ready can create connections and maps with more complex ideas and content. There are various formats available for concept mapping such as hierarchy, spider, timeline, and systems. Depending on the content, the instructor can assign specific formats. Collaboration can be used to group students either heterogeneously or homogenously and allow students to gain confidence and motivation.
