On a map, we need a way to describe where things are. We use directions to do this. The 4 directions on a map are: North South East West These are called cardinal directions. Here are the symbols we use for north, south, east, and west on a map: N = north S = south E = east W = west

13 N W E S Places near the top of Michigan are in the NORTH.
Places on the right side of Michigan are in the EAST. Places on the left side of Michigan are in the WEST. Places near the bottom of Michigan are in the SOUTH.
