Since then AHS MAPS has been a national model program that has been featured in educational conferences, educational best practices, and in two congressional briefings in Washington D.C.. Austin High has hosted over 400 educators visiting the program from all over the country, helping spread the course to high schools all over the state and country. Our lead MAPS teacher is also a co-author of School-Connect, a national research and evidence based curriculum that is in over 800 schools across all 50 states. School-Connect is the primary curriculum taught in the course with added lessons developed by district SEL leaders and MAPS teachers to meet the state MAPS standards. HS SEL Program High school can be a challenging time; research has shown how important taking a “whole child” approach is to the social, emotional and academic health of students. SEL is one of Dr. Paul Cruz/AISD’s top priorities and Austin High School is a leader in that initiative. The lessons covered are research based and help give students real tools for success in school, work and life. Austin Independent School District is nationally recognized for its’ strong commitment and programming in Social and Emotional Learning. The AHS SEL program is designed to give students strong support and key information as they navigate high school. These are the same skills that employers are looking for in the workplace and these same skills will impact many facets of their lives. The lessons are commonly taught in MAPS and are reinforced over the four years in advisory lessons. The program is well supported with national organizations (CASEL and School-Connect) and with AISD’s Department of Social and Emotional Learning.
