CHEMICAL SYMBOLS Chemical symbols are shorthand notation for the names of elements. There are 118 known elements. The last several have not been named (in a conventional manner).

If an element has a single letter to represent it – the letter must be capitalized.

Example: The molecular formula for water is H2O – this formula tells us that a molecule of water is formed from 2 atoms of hydrogen (symbol H) 1 atom of oxygen (symbol O) The subscript 2 tells how many atoms of the element on the left of the subscript are present.
