You are living in Europe during the Middle Ages. Given the choice, would you rather be the king/queen, a baron/noble, a knight, or a peasant and why?

3 King: ruled the kingdom
Baron/noble: leased land from king, serve royal council, provide knights for war, pay taxes Knights: military, protect king & baron, leased land from barons Peasants: land from knights, provided food & service for higher classes, no rights, needed permission to marry

4 Which class would you choose now? Why? (Write for 1 minute)

5 Establishing the Magna Carta
The people were like: Kings were not effective (didn’t get a lot done) Lost land Increased taxes Arrested people w/o trials

6 The Magna Carta church free from governmental interference, 1215 A.D.
the rights of all free citizens to own and inherit property protected from excessive equality before the law 1215 A.D. Gave rights to the people (nobles), and eventually commoners too Bound the king to certain laws

7 How do rights in the Magna Carta compare to some rights that we have today? (write for 2 minutes)

10 Martin Luther Studied law Promised to serve god if he survived a storm
Questioned the Catholic Church (1517) Indulgences

11 Martin Luther Translated new testament (part of the Bible) into German. Sparked Protestant Reformation.

12 Henry VIII Lived 1491 – 1547 King of England from 1509-1547.
Married Catherine of Aragon. Became interested in Anne Boleyn. Divorce not approved. Decided to start the Church of England (1530s).

13 Martin Luther, Henry VIII, and many others were important in the Protestant Reformation. Why might this reformation be important to people in European colonies? (write for 3 minutes)
