2. Chlorine dioxide ClO2 is a combination of Chlorine and Oxygen.
In the room temperature the chlorine dioxide is an amber-colored and toxic gas and it has a stinging smell like Chlorine.
The mixture of chlorine dioxide with air is extremely explosive with a concentration more than 10% of the volume.
It is usually used in liquid solution which is not explosive.

3. Chlorine dioxide ClO2
One method of production is the so called Hydrochloric acid - Chlorite Process:
The chlorine dioxide solution originates from
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) and Sodium chlorite (NaClO2) with the formula:
4 HCl + 5 NaClO2 = 4 ClO2 + 5 NaCl + 2 H2O
Hydrochloric acid + Sodium chlorite =
Chlorine dioxide + Sodium chlorite (salt) + water
The reaction becomes exothermic!
Other methods for drinking water preparation
according to DVGW-worksheets W 224 and W 624:
Chlorine-Chlorite-Process: 2 NaClO2 + Cl2 = 2 ClO2 + 2 NaCl
Peroxide sulfate-Chlorite-Process: 2 NaClO2 + Na2S2O2 = 2 ClO2 + 2 Na2SO4

4. Hydrochloric acid-Chlorite Process
with diluted chemicals
4 HCl + 5 NaClO2 = 4 ClO2 + 5 NaCl + 2 H2O
Hydrochloric acid (9%) + Sodium chlorite (7,5%) = Chlorine dioxide + ...
In practice:
0,5 Liter Hydrochloric acid (9%) + 0,5 Liter Sodium chlorite (7,5%)
= 1 Liter Chlorine dioxide solution (Conc. 20 g/l)
To avoid the possible formation of explosive Chlorine dioxide gas-/air mixture, the concentration will be reduced from around 20 g/l to 2 g/l by the dilution with water directly inside the reactor.
