ENGLISH During the Spring Term the Literacy Strategy – approximately one hour each day - will become well established in class. Shared Reading – whole class Guided Reading and Writing – small group Independent task – tasks to develop their skills and understanding of text, words and sentences Extended writing – independent task related to their text and sentence understanding Phonic work – there is a big emphasis on teaching phonics every day - for reading and writing 04/07/2018 UPMINSTER INFANT SCHOOL

MATHEMATICS Numeracy Lesson – approximately one hour each day which will become well established by the beginning of the Spring Term. Talk about self - Recognising ones own achievements. Belonging to a family. We are all special. The environs of the school and the wider community.

13 PHYSICAL EDUCATION Two sessions per week Games – ball skills to use in simple ball games with a partner/small group Gym – flight, jumping/landing/balancing, rolling, body shapes Dance – folk dance from different countries Athletics

Homework Homework in year 1 takes the form of shared tasks to reinforce and practise what the children have been learning in the class. e.g. Making a shoebox room for Geography to reinforce plans and maps Simple capacity activities Filling in missing capital letters and full stops Identifying different forces used around the house – i.e. push, pull, twist 04/07/2018 UPMINSTER INFANT SCHOOL

Homework Regular reading is important but it does not need to be just the school reading book. Reading books are changed twice a week and the children choose their book from their book band level. CLASS COUNCIL Every year two new school council members from each class are chosen by their peers. The School Council meet with the Head Teacher several times each term and the children largely decide on the agenda. 18 Phonic Screening At the end of the Summer Term all children will be given a Phonic Assessment in the form or reading a number of words – real and pseudo (which we call alien words): e.g. pat gelf snack sprong silk reb boil quain bright goily rubber chike Next to the alien word is a picture to help the children understand it is not a real word
