Viewpoint is available to be used with both Local SE & ME and SE network applications. Viewpoint is used with web clients with browsers. Examples of web clients: Laptops, desktops, phones, tablets…. Although it cannot be used with all web-enabled mobile phones or tablets: When Microsoft created Silverlight they created two instances, one is called "In-browser" and the other "Out-of-browser". FactoryTalk ViewPoint Client vs. View SE Client
Thin Client Graphics displays Browser navigation Remote monitoring of trends Remote monitoring of alarms Combine read/write Simple expressions Tag1 = Tag2 * FactoryTalk View SE Client Thick Client VBA ActiveX controls Full trending capability Full alarming capability Time-critical information Functions within tag expressions Advance options Lets do a comparison. Uses for VP client: monitoring (alarms, levels, overview of how the system is working), download simple data (setpoints) if you do not need to see historical trending data EXAMPLES: Remote control Turn on & off : pumps, lights, fans Close vales Setting setpoints Wireless connection when there is not any access to a hard wire Whether you are in the plant or 500 miles away and you need to make a change to a value or just needed to monitor which alarms are going off. If your data is critical and particularly time critical you may want to use the SE Client since it updates at the same rate it is getting data. Likewise, it has Higher availability and Performance. Some other differences, which some projects may rely heavenly on, are what are you using in your application VBA Using ActiveX controls (for example Microsoft or other 3rd party) If you have to have access to historical data when trending Advance options: language switching & recipe Viewpoint is used with web clients with browsers.
