1 Extension Activities:
Energy and Engineering Trends: Systems of Equations Duration: 90 min Standards: HSA.CED.A.1 HSA.CED.A.2 HSA.CED.F-IF.4 HSA.CED.A-REI.6 HSA.CED.A-REI.11 Overview: Students will examine energy trends to explore why energy efficiency is an important current area of focus. They will also look at current trends in engineering domestically (demographics). They will use their systems to model different scenarios to alter trends. Algebra 1 Materials: Smartboard to display video Worksheet Graphing calculator (TI-84) Pencils/Pens Graphing Paper Extension Activities: Have students research specific engineering careers and their demographic trends Challenge the higher-level learners with more complicated modeling scenarios.

2 Procedure: Teacher Tips:
Students will review systems of equations by watching a video called “Do the Math” on 360.org. They will estimate when carbon emissions will exceed 565 giga-tons and use systems of equations to solve. Students will have a discussion on the global energy conversation, as well as engineering careers. They will then be introduced to demographic data for engineering fields. Students will model different scenarios to answer questions regarding systems of equations. E.g. “How could we have female salaries equal male in 5 years? 10?” Teacher Tips: Watch the video ahead of time to find good spots to have discussions.
