1.1 Inductive Reasoning Inductive reasoning or induction is the process of reasoning to a general conclusion through observations of specific cases. Used to arrive at a conjecture A conjecture is a belief based on specific observations that has not been proven or disproven. A counterexample is used to show a conjecture is false.

Deductive Reasoning is used to prove a conjecture.

In-class examples: pgs. 6-8 #’s 22, 31, 39 & 42

HW: pgs. 6-8 #’s all, odd, 32, 34, 40, 41

1.2 Estimation

Estimation is the process of arriving at an approximate answer to a question.
Symbol means approximately equal to Used to determine reasonable, not exact answers

In-class examples: pgs. 14-18 #’s 5, 13, 21, 30, 33, 47

HW: pgs #’s 1-25, 34, 48

1.3 Problem Solving

Guidelines for Problem Solving:
Understand the problem. Devise a plan to solve the problem. Carry out the plan. Check the results.

In-class examples: pgs. 29-33 #’s 2, 4,13, 16, 25, 30, 32, 33

HW: pgs #’s 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 18, 20, 21, 22, 31, 34, 42
