“Homelessness is the most serious problem facing the nation.” OR “Building more shelters would solve the homeless problem.” *What text evidence can prove your opinion? *What would “Ann” say to your opinion? *How would Quindlen support or deny your opinion?

3 PROBLEM-SOLUTION ESSAY
This type of essay: *describes a real-life problem *presents one or more solutions *appears in newspapers or magazines (journalistic tone) *is a short work of nonfiction *must have text evidence to prove thought *shows real people in real distress *What is a problem?.... *What is a plausible solution?... *How can it be accomplished?...

4 As a table group and on a sheet of notebook paper, respond to each of these discussion prompts:
In lines (why is Ann important): *Think about a time when you met someone whose life seemed very different from yours. How does that experience help you understand the interaction between Quindlen and Ann, the homeless woman? *Do you, as a group you must agree, believe that Ann is just passing through? *Why do you, as a group, think the author included this information about Ann in her essay?

5 As a table group and on a sheet of notebook paper, respond to each of these discussion prompts:
In lines (author’s character/influences her view): *Have you ever realized that your ideas about a person were based only on how they looked or what they wore? How do you think this realization affects Quindlen’s understanding of Ann? *What does the author’s reaction to Ann’s photographs reveal about her (Quindlen’s) character? *If the author believes that “you are where you live,” how does she most likely view homelessness? (proof)

6 As a table group and on a sheet of notebook paper, respond to each of these discussion prompts:
In lines: *In lines 61 – 76, what point does Quindlen make? *In lines 95 – 109, what does Quindlen say homes have become? What does she MEAN? *In lines 132 – 148, how does Quindlen think most people “work around” the problem of homelessness?
