1
Ionic Compounds Metal Non-metal Magnesium-12 8 (+) 10 (-) -2 Charge
2
Ionic Compounds Attraction between + ions and - ions
Electrons go from metals to nonmetals electrons transfer from metal to nonmetal Yielding: cation+ & anion– Electrons lost = Electrons gained
3
Metals Non-Metals steal electrons from metals
They then attract because their charges are opposite. Metals
4
Naming monatomic Ions Metal Cations (+ charge):
For metals in groups IA, IIA and Aluminum They have a charge that doesn’t change (1+, 2+ &3+) Since the charge is constant, just knowing the element is enough to name them. Name the metal, then put ion Na+ Sodium ion Sr2+ Strontium ion Al3+ Aluminum ion
5
Naming monatomic Ions Metal Cations (+charge)
The other metals in the periodic table are called transition metals, and can generally have more than 1 charge (more on why later this year) The charge needs to be included in the name We do this by using roman numerals Metal(charge) ion Fe3+ Iron(III) ion, Cu2+ Copper(II) ion
6
Names of Variable Ions Use a roman number after the name of a metal that forms two or more ions Transition metals (Fe3+) iron(III) ion (Cu+ ) copper(I) ion (Sn4+) tin(IV) ion (Pb2+) lead(II) ion (Fe2+) iron(II) ion
7
-1 +1 -2 +3 -3 +2 Transition Metals have variable charges
8
Naming monatomic ions Anions (- charge)
Non-metals which are involved in ionic bonding have fixed charges To name their ions we add –ide to the end of the element name O2- Oxide F- Fluoride N3- Nitride
9
Negative Ions (single atoms)
-3 -2 -1 Most of the negative ions have a set negative charge
10
Naming Binary Ionic Compounds
Contain 2 different elements Name the metal first, then the nonmetal as -ide. Use name of a metal with a fixed charge Groups 1A, 2A, Al Examples: NaCl sodium chloride MgI2 magnesium iodide Al2O3 aluminum oxide
