Dutch Found New Netherland
1609 the first Dutchman Henry Hudson sailed up the Hudson River to explore lands This would later become New York 1621 Dutch West India Company colonizes New Netherland

A Diverse Colony Dutch differ from English in 2 ways
1) Diversity- welcome people from different countries 2) Eventually Friendly with Natives They achieve friendly terms through fur trades with natives

English Takeover 1664 Duke of York (English) becomes proprietor/owner of New Netherland Renames it New York Later gives land to his friends and names it New Jersey

Who were the Quakers? Religious group that did not have ministers; let the spirit speak through the members Harassed by Puritans and Anglicans William Penn (Quaker) founds Pennsylvania on these ideas 1) Freedom of Religion 2) Adult Males receive 50 acres/right to vote 3) Representative Assembly

How do they treat natives? Treat them with respect Over 50 years without conflict A Thriving Colony Penn recruits German minorities with success Eventually Quakers become minority and slavery is introduced

supports religious freedom James Oglethorpe Founded Georgia as a haven for those in debt By 1752 there are 13 English colonies in North America
