2 Bellringer 1. Alligators and other living organisms are __________ part of the environment 2. Water, soil, and other nonliving things are ________ parts of the environment 3.The first level of organization is the _________ organism 4. Two or more individuals of the same kind live together are a ________. 5. All the animals and plants that live in the same place are a ___________. 6.Community and it s abiotic environment make a __________

3 Bellringer How do producers and decomposers depend on each other? (*hint: think about decomposers as nature’s recyclers) How do producers and consumers depend on each other? How do consumers and decomposers depend on each other?

4 Food Chain Food Chain- A diagram that shows how energy flows from one organism to another. Because few organisms eat just one kind of food, simple food chains are rare.

5 Food Web Food Web- A diagram that shows the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem. A food web is multiple food chains put together. Why do the arrows point in the direction they do? Arrows represent the flow of energy not what eats what.

6 Energy Pyramid Energy Pyramid- A diagram that shows an ecosystem’s loss of energy. Less energy is available at higher levels! Producers are found at the bottom of the pyramid

7 Primary Consumer A consumer that feeds only on producers
Primary = FIRST This is the first consumer in a food chain or food web. What is another term we’ve already learned for a primary consumer?

8 Secondary Consumer A consumer that feeds mostly on primary consumers and producers. Secondary = SECOND This is the second consumer in a food chain or web. What is another term we learned for secondary consumer?

9 Tertiary Consumer A consumer that feeds mostly on secondary consumers.
Tertiary = THIRD This is the third consumer in a food chain or web. What is another term we learned for tertiary consumer?

10 Practicing with Whiteboards
ONLY write the answers on your white board CAP the markers immediately after writing the answer You will have 30 seconds to write the answer STAND to show me your answer when I count back from 10 and reach the number 1 The first set of questions will ask you about Food Chains, Food Webs, and Energy Pyramids The second set of questions will ask you about Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Consumers

11 With what kind of organism do all food chains/webs start?

12 Food Chains & Webs With what kind of organism do all food chains/webs end with?

13 Which is simpler, a food chain or a food web?
Food Chains & Webs Which is simpler, a food chain or a food web?
