What you should know about SJVA….
SJVA is a PYP (Primary Years Programme) based charter school. What does that mean? PYP is a curriculum framework that promotes inquiry and prepares children to be life-long and respectful learners in the classroom as well as in the competitive world around them. PYP contains key components with a global outlook and an appreciation for diverse perspectives. Our school requires parent involvement. Some examples include: Take her/him to the library. Assist with inquiry projects Participate in school events Make sure your child keeps up with homework and reads daily

Here is a small sample of what we will be learning this year! Social Studies: Communities Goods & Services/Needs & Wants Maps English/Language Arts: Different parts of speech Writing complete sentences and forming a paragraph Science: Weather & Seasons Water Cycle Gases & Matter Math: Addition and Subtraction Facts For more detailed information, I have included a link to the common core standards on my website.

Every week for homework, your child will have:
Spelling – Choose activities from the Spelling Menu and practice as often as possible until 100% on a pre-test at home. Math – Play the math games more than once. Go onto Dreambox for online practice. Reading – Read daily and practice through Raz-kids and Lexia (Language Arts program). Occasionally, your child may have: Science – Inquiry projects Social Studies – Inquiry projects Homework is collected on Fridays and new homework is also given on the same day. Students have the entire week to complete the H.W. Please check HW for neatness, completion, and sign on the Homework Cover Sheet.

All subjects: Reading and Writing Math
Encourage your child to do the work independently. Create a routine and stay consistent as much as possible. Please circle questions (s) your child had problems with. **Please contact me as soon as possible with any questions or concerns. Reading and Writing Ask questions! (ex. What do you think will happen next? ) Provide your child with plenty of reading material and allow them to choose. Have your child read to you and have discussions about the material. Math Have your child draw pictures or use manipulatives, and use real world examples to deepen their understanding of the concepts. Create flashcards for memorization of math facts and play those math games in the homework packet!

Classroom Rules and Expectations
Listen with your eyes, ears, and mind. Raise your hand. Follow directions. Work quietly. Respect yourself and others.

Behavior System and Discipline
We use: ClassDojo - A class management system that awards positive points for positive behavior, known as "dojos," and assigns negative points for unwanted behavior. Students can use the accumulated points for prizes or other fun incentives. Wolf Bucks – An accumulation of Wolf Bucks would mean a higher chance of winning our raffles during monthly Award Assemblies. Consequences: Warning Teacher's Choice (removal from group, detention) Parent Conference w/Action Plan (student & parent need to sign) Dean of Discipline

My Additional Expectations
Your child will: Always be reading and sharing their inquisitive minds Build organizational skills by maintaining neat and clean table groups, backpack, and binders. Be a responsible and independent learner at school as well as home. **Always try his/her best…no excuses.
