2 Starter: What is a controversy
Starter: What is a controversy? Where there is public disagreement or heated debate on an issue.

3 How do we deal with controversial issues?
Learning objective: to learn about and consider the range of opinions that might exist on a controversial issue and consider the diverse range of opinions related to the issue and how people might respond. L4: to be able to explain your own view (with reasons) on a controversial issue and how it should be dealt with. L5: to be able to identify, compare and consider more than one point of view on a controversial issue. L6: to identify the strengths and weaknesses in arguments.

4 What have we considered:
Society is made up of many communities/groups. Many communities/groups are diverse. Diverse groups have many differing views within them. Wider society is therefore very diverse and there are many views with complex reasons. People have different ways of approaching and dealing with issues and their approach depends on many factors related to their ideas or experiences. Making decisions as a group is very difficult and means some people will feel ‘disengaged’ or angry.

A useful proverb: You can please some of the people all of the time. You can please all of the people some of the time. YOU CAN NEVER PLEASE ALL OF THE PEOPLE, ALL OF THE TIME.

Holding a debate. Read through the rules of debating. This is how we are going to debate a controversial issue. Write a question or issue that you think is controversial and pass to the front.

How do we deal with controversial issues? Learning objective: to learn about and consider the range of opinions that might exist on a controversial issue (e.g. animal rights) and consider the diverse range of opinions related to the issue and how people might respond. A vote will be held to decide what we are voting on. The person who came up with the topic to debate will propose a motion [“This house believes…]. We will then divide the class based on the initial vote and then proceed to debate. We will vote again at the end. Teacher chairs the debate.
