1 The Joy of Ions and the Importance of Electrons notes start date:_____ 4.10, 4.11, 5.1, 5.2
click me and minimize first :)

2 Isn’t it ionic… It’s like raaaiiiin on your wedding day!
Ok maybe not quite. But I bet you’ll think about ions the next time you hear this Alanis Morissette song 

3 Mommy, how are ions made? An ion is an atom or molecule that has a charge from gaining or losing 1+ e’s Atoms will form ions when a metal bonds with a nonmetal

4 The talk continues… cation – positively charged ion produced when electrons are lost from neutral atom

5 The talk continues… anion – negatively charged ion produced when electrons are gained from neutral

6 Well that’s all well and good Mommy, but how are ions named?
cations name = name of element + “ion” ex. Mg2+ is called “magnesium ion” anions name = root of element name + “ide” ex. Cl- is called “chloride”

7 Now you try! Name the following cations and anions: Na+ Li+ Ca2+ Br-

8 Knowing what ions will form
Figure 4.19 on p. 109 is a great reference Table 5.1 on p. 125 as well Groups 1, 2 and 3 form 1+, 2+ and 3+ cations (Hydrogen forms both H+ and H-) Group 7 metals form 1- anions, Group 6 metals form 2- anions

9 Ball time Everybody needs their periodic table out 

10 Ionic Compounds Ionic compounds contain both a ______ and a _______ and are _______ overall. Salt, NaCl is an example of a common ionic compound. What is the cation here? What is the anion here?

11 Special properties of ionic compounds
Ionic compounds have very high boiling points. Example: They conduct electricity when dissolved in water b/c the compound dissolves into its ions

12 That’s all well and good, Mommy, but how are ionic compounds named?
Binary ionic compounds – 1 cation + 1 anion = 2 ions overall, hence binary Type 1: a non-transition metal plus a non-metal when 2 becomes 1

13 Naming Type I Binary Ionic Compounds
Say the name of the metal element Now say the name of the nonmetal anion Ex: KBr is potassium bromide

14 Now you try: CsCl MgO BeS
In your notes, name the following binary ionic compounds: CsCl MgO BeS

15 Naming Binary Ionic Compounds that contain Transition Metals
transition metals- the metals in the middle rectangle of the periodic table, most form _________ cations Ex: Fe3+ is iron(III) Fe2+is iron( )

16 To name ionic compounds containing transition metals…
Say the _______’s name, followed by ________ Now say the name of the ________ Ex: Fe2O3: iron(III) oxide MnO2: manganese(IV) oxide

17 Figuring out the charge on the cation
Look at the chemical formula, and figure out the __________________ Figure out what the charge on the cation must be so that the overall charge is ________.

18 Example time! Two together.
PbCl4 The anion is Cl- The charge on the anion is ____. ____ x ____ = 0 The charge on the cation is ____. The name of this compound is lead( ) chloride.

19 Example time! Two together.
MnO2 The anion is ____ The charge on the anion is ____. ___ + (2 x ____) = 0 The charge on the cation is ____. The name of this compound is manganese( ) oxide.

20 Now you try! What are the names of the following compounds? PbBr4
CoCl3 FeS

21 Use table to come up with binary ionic compounds
BINGO time!! Use table to come up with binary ionic compounds Write compounds (formulas) in bingo board Play for chocolate
