2 The War Dawn 2nd Continental Congress(1775)- met in Philadelphia, 3 weeks after Lexington and Concord, on what to do next Adopts 30,000 troop Militia surrounding Boston Named Continental Army with George Washington in charge

3 Battle of Bunker Hill (1775)
British attempt to take hills north of Boston Continental Army push back two British Advances Forced to retreat after running out of ammo British lose 1000, Colonists 450 Proves they can stand up to Britain

4 Olive Branch Petition (1775)
Petition sent to King George III stating the colonies were still loyal to him and call of hostilities until things could be resolved Offer refused

5 Common Sense (1776) Written by Thomas Paine, labeled King George III a tyrant, and time to declare independence Greatly changed public opinion on blaming king Pushed continental congress to vote for independence

6 Sources of Independence
Thomas Hobbes- monarchs gain power from consent of the people, not God John Locke- your experiences determine your life, we are all equal Life liberty, and property= natural rights Gov’t should protect those rights Right to rebel- if peoples rights are violated, people can rebel

7 July 4th, 1776 2nd continental Congress approves the Declaration of Independence Declared the 13 colonies are free and independent states Connections with Britain dissolved Justified separation from Britain
